 Inspector Mosquito Extermination | Passaic County Mosquito Control

  • Salary Range:  $48,000 - $58,000 (commensurate with qualifications and experience)

Job Description 

Under direction, performs field inspections to locate and identify mosquito habitat, and applies pesticides to control mosquitoes.  Does related work as required.

Examples of work:

  • Performs inspections of larval mosquito habitats (such as swamps, bogs, woodland pools, roadside ditches, retention ponds, artificial containers, or other areas where stagnant water exists)
  • Applies approved pesticides according to specific manufacturer's directions
  • Drives a truck to reach mosquito habitats and to respond to complaints of mosquito nuisance
  • Performs water management/source reduction efforts by hand to reduce larval mosquito habitat
  • Performs unskilled laboring work (such as snow removal, for example) when there is a lull in the inspection assignments
  • Loads equipment onto truck
  • Keeps records of pesticide applications 

Requirements:

Experience:  Minimum of one (1) year of experience in mosquito control work

Licenses: 

  1. Possession of a current and valid license as a 'commercial pesticide applicator' in Category 8B (Mosquito Control), issued by New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, is required
  2. Possession of a current and valid driver's license in New Jersey is required

Vector Control Specialist

Philadelphia Department of Public Health


The Philadelphia Department of Public Health is seeking dynamic, skilled and experienced candidates to support our Vector Control program with advanced work in surveillance and control of both mosquitoes and ticks. The mission of Environmental Health Services is to maintain environments, prevent disease, and promote public health through education and regulation.  EHS monitors, assess, inspects and educates the public about vectors, food safety and environmental engineering. The Vector Control Specialist is responsible for implementing both mosquito and tick surveillance and control while using Integrated Pest Management practices throughout Philadelphia. Key duties include program design, fieldwork, data collection and entry, tick and mosquito surveillance and control activities, as well as coordination with co-workers, neighboring counties and Pennsylvania (PA) Department of Environmental Protection staff.


Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducting comprehensive field studies and monitoring on the abundance, distribution, and life stage of both ticks and mosquitoes as it relates to effective treatment in Philadelphia.
  • Collecting and submitting mosquito and tick samples for identification and testing.
  • Entering all collected data and shipping of biological samples for identification testing.
  • Conducting an effective mosquito larvaciding program that targets known disease vectors, while maintaining accurate records according to the PA Department of Agriculture regulations.
  • Assist in planning & implementation of adult mosquito control programs.
  • Conducting pre-and post-treatment monitoring of mosquito locations and map mosquito production areas.
  • Assist in vector program educational activities as directed.
  • Attending staff, team, and other meetings as required.


Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree or relevant experience in Entomology, Biology or a closely related field
  • Currently possess or be able to acquire a PA Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator’s License
  • Minimum 2 years of work experience in a vector control program specializing in mosquito and tick work


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to identify larval, pupal and adult mosquitoes
  • Ability to identify species and life stages of ticks
  • Ability to operate mosquito control application equipment
  • Ability to transport and set up equipment in isolated areas
  • Ability to read and understand label directions for the application on insect eradication agents
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing


Salary

  • Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
